5 Fun Facts about Polar Bears, Penguins, and Other Mysterious Animals of the Extreme Cold

Enslow author Anna Maria Rodriguez's new book, Polar Bears, Penguins, and Other Mysterious Animals of the Extreme Cold gives us a glimpse into the world of the unusual animals that live near the north and south poles. Since Polar Bears, Penguins, and Other Mysterious Animals of the Extreme Cold will be released soon, I'd like to share a 5 interesting facts from the book:

1. Polar bears spend so much time swimming and on ice floes that they are actually considered marine mammals. If you translate their scientific name, Ursus maritimus, you'll see that it means "Sea Bear".

2. The Antarctic cod has special proteins, called peptides, that prevent it from freezing.

3. Adult male polar bears will usually not hibernate during the winter.

4. Scientists have located major emperor penguin colonies by taking satelite images of Antarctica and looking for areas stained by penguin guano.

5. Polar bears will sometimes show signs of frustration when they lose a seal that they have been hunting.

If you still can't get enough information about these Extreme Animals, check out the book here:

Fun Facts About 1990s Fashions

Paperback ISBN: 978-1-59845-282-2
Library-Bound ISBN: 978-0-7660-3827-1
Trying to understand another generation's fashions is -- how can we put it -- challenging. Take the 1990s as an example. Can you explain a hairstyle called the "Rachel"?

According to Enslow Publishers' new book, Fabulous Fashions of the 1990s, the Rachel "was a little curly and a little straight. It was shoulder length but had short pieces, too. It was golden brown and a bit blonde."

The hairstyle, made popular by its association with Friends star Jennifer Aniston, became part of the decade's fashion lexicon. Find out more out 90s fashions in author Felicia Lowenstein Niven's fun, factual 48-page book. The title, included in Enslow's "Fabulous Fashions of the Decades" series, is available in paperback for $7.95. A library-bound edition of Fabulous Fashions of the 1990s is available to schools and libraries for $17.95 (price reflects a 25% discount from Enslow's list price for the library-bound edition).

Fun Facts about Ferrets

978-0-7660-3683-3
Grades 3-4
Did you know that the word ferret comes from a Latin word meaning "little thief?" Ferrets like stealing things from around the house and hiding them.

Some people say that a ferret is like a dog and a cat rolled into one. They enjoy playing (like cats) and are quite intelligent (like dogs.) This member of the weasel family includes minks, otters, skunks, martens, fishers, and wolverines. Unlike dogs which calm down and slow down as they get older, ferrets like to play their entire lives.

Did you know that ferrets can catch colds like humans? They can even catch a cold from a human (and return the favor as well!) Just because they are small, ferrets take work. Making sure that the litter box is clean, ample play time, enough food and fresh water, and enough toys to distract them from chewing on furniture, are all things to take into consideration when considering a pet ferret.

ISBN: 978-0-7660-2952-1
Grades 3–4
This activity is great for this time of year, especially with kids being out of school. Granted, here on the East Coast we haven't had snow since Halloween, but the thought of creating paper snowflakes is appealing!

Paper Crafts for Christmas contains instructions for making eight different paper crafts, including snowflakes. If making snowflakes doesn't appeal to you, you can also make a wreath, a Christmas tree, a pop-up chimney card, an ornament, and more!

Randel McGee wrote and created all of the crafts.
