Animals and Kids

I like to say that animals and kids go together like peanut butter and jelly. We know it's hard to keep animal books on any shelf, whether it's the library, the classroom, or the bookstore. I'm a little partial to dogs and bears myself.

Here at Enslow we have an abundance of animal titles.  From baby animals to endangered animals, from dog heroes to animals that live in the snow and ice. We've recently added animal titles to our PreK collection because librarians and teachers were asking for them. You can even find books about some of the biggest and smallest animals in the world. And you can't forget about pet care. Whether kids own pets or not, we know they love to read about them.

Remember, today is the last day to enter our Pick-A-Page Giveaway. Go to one of our e-catalogs and pick a page of titles you would like to receive for free. Like us on Facebook and leave a comment on Facebook, letting us know which page you would like to receive. We will choose one winner by random at the end of the week. That winner will be announced on Facebook on Monday!

Baby Animal Books for Summer Pre-K Reading

Summertime offers wonderful chances for very young children to combine their activity in the great outdoors with their interest in reading. Books can reinforce and nourish a child's curiosity that a trip to the zoo, a day in the country, or a staycation in the backyard can stimulate.

Enslow Publishers' Pre-K books deliver the exciting color photos, age-appropriate text, and "just right" book size to engage young readers in satisfying ways. Author Jane Katirgis' "All About Baby Animals" series includes a delightful sextet of 24-page, Guided Reading Level "B" titles, each one addressing specific Pre-K-friendly subjects.

Among the works are Baby Backyard Animals, Baby Farm Animals, and Baby Zoo Animals. Each title in the series is available in paperback for $6.95 and can be purchased directly from the Enslow Classroom website. The books are also available in library-bound editions.

Books for Upcoming Kindergarten Day

On Thursday, April 21st, Kindergarten Day will be celebrated. The day corresponds with the birthday of the 19th German pedagogue Friedrich Frobel, who was principally responsible for the "kindergarten" concept and its practical realization. His followers opened the first kindergartens in the United States in the years prior to the Civil War.

Since that time, kindergartens have become a staple of American education, especially through its importance in enhancing a child's reading skills. Five Enslow Publishers' series target this critical need. The quintet consists of the following series:
Each series includes six, 24-page full-color books offering an enriching blend of fun reading and useful content. The Guided Reading Level "B" titles are ideal for emerging readers or those who require a scaffolded approach to reading interest and success. A teacher's guide is available for each title in all five series.

Paperback editions of each book cost $6.95; "six-packs" of each paperback title are available for the 10% discount price of $41.70. Library-bound editions are available to schools and libraries for $15.95.

We can all be at ease (me especially) knowing that the cobra that escaped from the Bronx Zoo Reptile House has been found. Whew! To celebrate we're spotlighting our Biggest vs. Smallest Slimy, Scaly Creatures title. Students can read about and compare the biggest and smallest lizards, frogs, and snakes in this 24-page book for grades K–3.

Baby Snow Animals

January snowstorms, a common occurance in many regions of the United States, present opportunities to raise a child's awareness of the interaction between the natural world and climate. To support this educational approach, teachers and parents can use Enslow Publishers' Baby Snow Animals. The title, included in the "All About Baby Animals" series, invites emerging readers to delightfully discover young animals who live in charactertistically wintry conditions. Author Jane Katirgis' 24-page book provides a thoughtfully chosen combination of sight words and associated, full-color photographs that children can enjoy. Instructors will welcome Baby Snow Animals' teacher's guide, which includes useful class activities suitable for the book's Guided Reading Level "B" text and pre-K to grade one interest level.

The teacher's guide is available as a free downloadable document. Baby Snow Animals is available in paperback for $6.95; a library-bound version is also available.
