Two new math series for Spring 2014

Enslow has just published two new math series, one geared toward the elementary reader and the other toward the middle school reader.

Ready for Math, a series for the upper elementary reader, contains six titles, each of which focuses on a different math topic. The clear and inviting design includes many practice problems to aid the student when reviewing math skills.

Did you know that paper currency was first printed in 1862? It's true! In order to make up for the shortage of coins, as well as to help pay for the Civil War, the U.S. Department of the Treasury decided to start printing paper money. Coins were scarce because people started hoarding them. During the war, items fluctuated in value, however since coins were made from gold and silver, and those prices did not fluctuate as much, people began hoarding the coins.

Today, coins are usually made of copper and another element of, such as zinc or nickel. Paper currency is composed of 25 percent linen and 75 percent cotton. Red and blue synthetic fibers of various lengths are distributed evenly throughout the paper.

Elementary students learning about money will enjoy working with the I Like Money Math! series. Word Problems...No Problem!

You might not realize it all the time because math isn't always written as a math problem, but math is everywhere! Our new series Math Busters Word Problems helps students understand how algebra is used in word problems using topics, they can relate to. Here's an algebra word problem using addition from our Algebra Word Problems title:

Coach had the entire track team run 4 laps. When they finished, he had the distance runners run some more laps. Each distance runner ran 40 laps in all. Use an algebraic equation to find how many laps the distance runners ran after the rest of the team had finished running?
