On Sept. 21, 1937

On this day in 1937, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien was published.

Born John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, this author is best known for his original worlds and creatures, many of whom appear in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings stories.

Through a thorough exploration of his life and work, Edward Willett brings to life the inner workings of the mind of this author who made fantasy writing what it is today. Photographs and Internet addresses are included.

Happy Birthday Stephen King

Stephen King, master of the macabre, knows that the scariest monsters may look just like ordinary people. Unleashing the evil in our everyday world has made King a best-selling author around the globe. Across years steeped in fears and poverty, King was driven to write, even as the piles of rejection letters grew. "It is the tale, not he who tells it," says Stephen King, but biographer Suzan Wilson's candid and entertaining portrait proves him wrong.

Derek Jeter for Yankees' Monument Park?

This week, the New York Yankees placed a plaque for late owner George Steinbrenner in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park. The site commemmorates great members of the Yankee organization, such as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle. We wouldn't be surprised if a current Yankee player, shortstop Derek Jeter, receives this honor after his retirement.

Fortunately, we can see the Yankee infielder play this season on a daily basis. Watching Jeter reminds us that not only is Jeter a fine baseball player, but that his life story is an uplifting one. Young readers can learn about this athlete's background, character, and career in Enslow Publishers' Derek Jeter: Captain On and Off the Field. This high-interest, 128-page biography is available in paperback, and is included among the titles in the Enslow Classroom paperback portfolio. The book, also available in a library-bound edition, would make a welcome, timely addition to your classroom library collection!

LaDainian Tomlinson carries the Jets

LaDainian Tomlinson shined in yesterday's game against the Patriots at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Being 31 years old, some say LT is too old, washed up, losing his ability etc., but he really proved those people wrong in yesterday's game by rushing for 76 yards on 11 carries.

To read more about his performance yesterday, click here.

While Enslow's book, LaDainian Tomlinson: All-Pro On and Off the Field doesn't include information on his new season with the Jets, it still has some great information about what a terrific athlete and humanitarian LT is. This book is also available in library bound editions, and great for reluctant readers.
