See Mark Enslow Up Close With Poison Dart Frogs

In light of New York State's and New York City's adoption of Enslow Publishers' Poison Dart Frogs Up Close into the Grade 3 curriculum, company president Mark Enslow recently hit the road in search of these beautiful, but lethal, creatures. Mark was able to get up close with poison dart frogs (as shown in the photograph) during a visit to a Pennsylvania site that humanely showcases benign or deadly amphibians and reptiles.

Right now, young readers can safely up close with poison dart frogs with Enslow's Poison Dart Frogs Up Close. Author Carmen Bredeson's 24-page, Guided Reading Level K work offers on-target informational text, excellent color photographs, and a reader-friendly design. The book is available in paperback direclty from Enslow Publishers for $6.95. A library-bound edition and a multi-user e-book version is also available.

Poison Dart Frogs Up Close is also available from your preferred vendor, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon.

Two Enslow Titles Make the 2012 SB&F Best List!

We're jumping for joy! The 2012 SB&F Best List contains a collection of all the highly recommended books and media resources reviewed by SB&F (Science Books & Films) this year and we're excited to have not one, but TWO books make the list this year.

The first book is Recycle: Green Science Projects for a Sustainable Planet from our Team Green Science Projects series. Projects that employ the scientific method are sure to engage and excite young minds.
Perfect for science fair projects!

The second book is Don't Let the Barber Pull Your Teeth: Could You Survive Medieval Medicine? by Carmen Bredeson from our Ye Yucky Middle Ages series illustrated by Gerald Kelley. This book also received a two-starred review! For a free educator's guide for this book, click here.

Looking forward to spring

Library ISBN 978-0-7660-3978-0
Grades PreK–1
Granted, it's been a mild winter (so far) here in the Northeast, and we have to be grateful for that. Read through some of our lastest Enslow Elementary books and you will probably learn new things. Did you know that coquinas are those seashells that look like butterflies when they are open? I've seen coquinas over the years, but never knew what they were called. Also, I really like the lightening whelk. They are beautiful. Having gone to the Jersey shore, as well as parts of Cape Cod as a child, I can remember walking the beaches looking for seashells and sand dollars with my family. We would have contests to see who could find the prettiest and most intact shells.

Enslow Elementary's All About Nature series contains seven titles that are great for early readers. Each title starts with Can You Find and discusses a different subject. Birds, bugs, butterflies, flowers, rocks, seashells, and trees are all available as separate library-bound titles, and were written by Carmen Bredeson and Lindsey Cousins.

Sensible Book About Weird Weather for Grade K-3 Readers

Weird weather gets kids' attention. They talk about it at home, with their peers, and even in class. Leveraging that interest with page-turning books about unusual weather takes advantage of those situations, with benefits for young readers, teachers, and parents.

Enslow Publishers' Weird But True Weather is a 24-page book suitable for Grades K-3 readers. Author Carmen Bredeson's title features two-page spreads in which excellent color photographs support the Guided Reading Level "I" text. The book's nifty 9" x 7 1/2" trim size gives the illustrations and text a sense of scale young readers need. Its "Learn More" section offers useful, age-appropriate information for further print and web-based reading.

Weird But True Weather, part of Enslow's six-book "Weird But True Science" series, is avaiable in paperback for $6.95. A library-bound edition is available to schools and libraries for $15.95 -- a 25% discount from Enslow's list price.

There's a Rat in My Soup!

Library: 978-0-7660-3785-4
Paperback: 978-1-59845-375-1
Can you imagine going to a restaurant, ordering a whole turkey for your family (as an example) and then when the waitress/waiter brings your turkey to you, the cook has stuck the skin, feathers, head, feet, and other parts back onto the turkey to make it look like it's alive! To shock guests, cooks would sew the head of one animal onto the body of another before serving. The head of a rooster would be sewn onto the body of a baby pig!

Animal parts were not wasted. Internal organs, feet, necks, even pig ears and cow udders were eaten! Gelatin was made from boiled calves' feet and then cooked fish were placed in the gelatin to make it look like they were swimming!

Written for reluctant readers, this title, and the three others in the series, Don't Let the Barber Pull Your Teeth, Sweaty Suits of Armor, and Ye Castle Stinketh are available in both library and paperback editions.

Yesterday was the anniversary of the First Walk on the Moon

Enslow's new elementary book, Weird But True Space Facts, has a photo of the footprint. As the description says, since there is no rain on the moon, nor any wind, that footprint is still there after more than 40 years!

This title has a lot of great trivia information. Did you know that the dark areas on the moon were made from lava? The lava flowed out of volcanoes on the moon, and then ran into low spots, creating those dark areas.

Available in both library and paperback editions, this series also contains titles about animal homes, food, human body facts, rocks, and weather.

It's Dental Health Month!

I know this is a stretch, but I had to blog about this upcoming Enslow title. I think the entire series is wonderful, but this book is the closest to the subject matter. It's called Don't Let the Barber Pull Your Teeth, and will be available in the fall of 2011.
It discusses how medicine was practiced in the Middle Ages, including how barbers were the ones who performed surgery, pulled teeth, set bones, stitched cuts, etc., because they were the ones who had sharp scissors and knives. Imagine that! Did barbers go to medical school? Of course not!
Another interesting tidbit about barbers: did you know that barber poles were used as advertisements for barbers? They would wrap bloody rags around the pole, or put a bowl of blood in the window. The barbers learned their craft from looking at books that contained diagrams of which veins to cut to heal each part of the body. It was thought that too much blood in one part of the body led to an imbalance. By draining blood from the sick part of the body, balance would be restored.
Great for reluctant readers, this series also includes Sweaty Suits of Armor, There's a Rat in My Soup, and Ye Castle Stinketh. Look for them this fall!
