Karen Cioffi reviews "Early American Poetry"

Karen Cioffi wrote a great review for Early American Poetry- "Beauty in Words" on the blog "Virtual Book Tours: Writers on the Move". Here is an excerpt from Karen's review:
Early American Poetry “Beauty in Words” explores poetry in America from colonial days to the end of the nineteenth century. It is a wonderful stepping stone for children to journey into the world of verse. Illustrations and pictures of the authors lend an air of informality to the book while the poems, facts, information, and descriptions enlighten the child to poets such as Anne Bradstreet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickenson, and Walt Whitman, to name a few.

An excerpt from her review:
"The Bottom Line: Astonishing Ancient World Scientists: Eight Great Brains by Amy Graham fills a niche by providing biographical information for subjects that might not receive a full treatment. The book’s reinforced binding will hold up nicely in both school and public libraries. This collective biography is highly recommended for kids in middle school and early high school."

Master the Scientific Method with Fun Life Science Projects Reviewed By Wendy Thomas Of Bookpleasures.com

Bookpleasures.com Book Reviewer Wendy Thomas gives an awesome review of Ann Benbow and Colin Mably's "Master the Scientific Method with Fun Life Science Projects"

"Master the Scientific Method with Fun Life Science Projects
is one of the clearest tools I’ve seen that teaches and explains to children exactly how to methodically move from query to investigative conclusion using the scientific method.....

Master the Scientific Method with Fun Life Science Projects takes what can be a complicated subject for young children to understand and presents it in such an informative and precise manner that anyone would be able to follow and understand the scientific principals."

"The Lucky Baseball: My Story in a Japanese-American Internment Camp" Reviewed by Amy Lignor

Amy Lignor of Bookpleasures.com writes:
"I’ve read many powerful stories regarding this time period, but I have to say that this read really hit home. ‘Watching’ this whole horrible event play out through the eyes of a child gave me a whole new perspective on Pearl Harbor and the treatment of Japanese Americans by the United States. Harry was an innocent; he was not the enemy. A great deal of Japanese American citizens were most definitely not the enemy of America."

A Student's Guide to the Brontë Sisters Review

BrontëBlog gave a great review of Enslow's "A Student's Guide to the Brontë Sisters"
The following is some excerpts from the review. For the entire review, please click here.

"Particular attention is paid to Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights with a chapter devoted to each novel. Anne Brontë's works are not forgotten or glossed over as the author keeps a chapter for the younger sister which is particularly interesting as Ms Pasachoff goes beyond the
mainstream literary agenda and praises The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey which she considers a precedent in many aspects of Jane Eyre itself"

"clear and not overwhelming typeface in order to appeal to all those students which don't limit themselves to the Wikipedia articles or the same old online Jane Eyre/Wuthering Heights essays and want to discover the basics of the lives and works of the Brontës. If some of them comes across this book in their local or high school library we are pretty sure they will not be disappointed."

Diane Chen of SLJ reviews Who On Earth is Aldo Leopold?

Diane Chen writes in her blog for SLJ, "Pratically Paradise":
"Once I began reading, I wondered again why publishers haven't shared more on Aldo Leopold. Then I remembered... Ah! publishers are publishing only the biographies that they have determined school librarians will purchase. They don't take huge risks these days."

Booklist review of Frederick Douglass, "Truth is of No Color"

Reviewer, Gillian Engberg, discusses Frederick Douglass, "Truth is of No Color" in the June 1 issue of Booklist.

"From the opening, heart-pounding scenes of Frederick Douglass’ flight to freedom to his childhood, spent in slavery, and his history-making adult life, this entry in Americans—The Spirit of a Nation series is an engaging introduction to the famous abolitionist. Well-sourced excerpts, including many passages from Douglass’ own writings, and vivid description enliven the text, which also includes sidebars focused on related historical figures and events."

Math Fun With Sebastian Pig and Friends!

Enslow Elementary's math series, Math Fun With Sebastian Pig and Friends was recently reviewed in SLJ's Series Made Simple April 2009. (To see the review, click the title link!)

These books are fun ways to teach kids how to count, subtract, add, measure, count money or find shapes. I was just reading Money Math With Sebastian Pig and Friends At the Farmer's Market, and the illustrations are incredible and really bring the characters of Sebastian Pig and his friend Louie the anteater alive. Elementary school students are going to love to learn math this way!
