Enslow Author Receives NAACP Nomination Second Year In a Row!

We are proud to announce that our title, Jesse Owens: "I Always Loved Running" by Jeff Burlingame has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Youth Teens. We're not surprised though as this is the second year in a row that Mr. Burlingame has been nominated for this award. Last year, he was nominated for our title, Malcolm X: "I Believe in the Brotherhood of Man, All Men".

ISBN-13: 978-0-7660-3497-6
Grades 6-up
$23.93 School and Library Price

What did Jeff have to say about being nominated for the second year in a row? "I am again honored, and rather amazed, at having been nominated for this prestigious award two years in a row. The shock I felt last year when I received word of my first nomination was almost inexpressible. This year, in which the Image Awards committee received a record number of submissions, I'm even more stunned. But definitely appreciative!"

When asked about his experience attending the awards in Los Angeles last year, Mr. Burlingame described it as a career and life highlight. "I met many wonderful people. My family and I walked the red carpet right behind U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin and a few steps in front of the show's co-host, Holly Robinson Peete."  Once inside, Burlingame and his family were seated amongst stars who included Halle Berry and LL Cool J, just to name a few. You can read the original story here.

Author Jeff Burlingame at last year's NAACP Image Awards

Jeff Burlingame, is a journalist and author of many biographies and nonfiction books for young readers. When we asked him about his experience writing the biography of Olympic track star, Jesse Owens, Burlingame said, "I've long been a fan of the sport of track and field and have known Jesse Owens' story for as long as I can remember. The book explores themes of poverty, racism, and heroism. Jesse's story also is inspirational, controversial, educational, and somewhat heartbreaking. As an author, I just tried to get out of the way and let the story tell itself."

The 43rd NAACP Image Awards will broadcast from The Shrine Auditorium on Friday, February 17, 2012 live 8/7C on NBC.

30th anniversary of the death of John Lennon

Fans have been gathering outside of The Dakota, the apartment building in which John Lennon lived, as well as at Strawberry Fields, a memorial to Lennon located just inside Central Park across from The Dakota.

Every year, fans gather and play/listen to John's music. His song "Imagine, " probably one of his best-known works, is a favorite.

Enslow's book on John Lennon describes his childhood, his life as a Beatle, as well as his life as a solo artist. High school students will learn a lot about John Lennon from this book.

Today would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday

There are a lot of web sites dedicated to this famous singer and musician, as well as a movie Nowhere Boy, being released in the U.S. on Friday, Oct. 8.

"How different might music, and perhaps the world, be if a crazed fan had not prematurely ended Lennon's life? All one can do is imagine." These two sentences are from Jeff Burlingame's biography John Lennon: "Imagine."

Avril Lavigne is celebrating a birthday today

"A big part of Lavigne's appeal always has been her life story. When a young girl from a small town in Canada becomes one of the biggest stars on the planet, people everywhere get inspired. But when that small-town girl becomes successful, negative people everywhere begin looking for flaws."

This quote is from Avril Lavigne: Celebrity with Heart. Written for the middle school, it is available in both library and paperback versions.

John Lennon: "Imagine"

I have been a Beatles fan ever since I was little, which is unusual for a girl born in 1986. I remember in 7th grade, we all had to do presentations on something to increase our public speaking skills. Most girls picked topics like the Spice Girls, new fashions, or Hello Kitty: and I picked The Beatles.

Anyway, we have this great new unauthorized biography out by Jeff Burlingame called John Lennon: "Imagine".

I just started reading it and am fascinated by Lennon's life so far. There's a lot of things I knew, but things I didn't know; like Strawberry Fields was actually an ophanage near John's house growing up that he used to play by.

Now would be the perfect time to stock up on this title and give it a read because the movie Nowhere Boy is coming out in the US October 8, 2010. It already came out in the UK last year. It's a story about Lennon's childhood, which accompanies Burlingame's book well. I am really excited to go see the movie after I finish the book.
