More on the Common Core

There has been a lot of talk about the Common Core State Standards and how Appendix B applies. Many educators are using the list as a primary source for text.  The Common Core State Standards states as follows, with regards to appendix B:

Selecting Text Exemplars
"The following text samples primarily serve to exemplify the level of complexity and quality that the Standards require all students in a given grade band to engage with. Additionally, they are suggestive of the breadth of texts that students should encounter in the text types required by the Standards. The choices should serve as useful guideposts in helping educators select texts of similar complexity, quality, and range for their own classrooms. They expressly do not represent a partial or complete reading list."

There are many ways for educators to choose excellent books for their reading lists. Some of them include:
Recommendations from other teachers, librarians, and even parents!

Award Winners. You can find many award winning lists on the Internet.

Review committees and booksellers post their lists on their web sites.

How are you choosing your books for your reading list to use in conjunction with the Common Core State Standards? We would like to know!

"Easy Earth-Friendly Crafts in Five Steps" awarded Children's Choices for 2009 Award

We are very excited to announce that our Enslow Elementary book, Easy Earth-Friendly Crafts in Five Steps, has been awarded
the Children's Choices for 2009 Award!

"Each year 12,500 school children from different regions of the United States read newly published children's and young adults' trade books and vote for the ones they like best. These Children's Choices, selected from more than 500 titles, can be counted on as books children really enjoy reading. This list, a project of a joint committee supported by IRA and The Children's Book Council (CBC), is designed for use not only by teachers, librarians, administrators, and booksellers, but also by parents, grandparents, caregivers, and everyone who wishes to encourage young people to read for pleasure."

"Enslow Publishers is delighted to accept the Children’s Choices award for 2009. This award is especially significant to our staff because the end readers choose the books themselves – the children. We are especially excited to have won this award two years in a row. Big Cats by Elaine Landau won in 2008. We promise to continue publishing quality materials both children and librarians enjoy reading," says Mark Enslow.
