Meet our author, Loren Spiotta-DiMare

As an avid animal lover,Loren has been writing books and magazine articles about various animals for over 30 years. Her current personal menagerie consists of six beloved dogs, numerous pet birds, a rabbit, and a Koi pond. She has been horseback riding on and off throughout her entire life. Five years ago, Elwood, a Quarter Horse, joined the family. "The bond I've developed with Elwood is like no other," Loren says. "Since he is my first horse, I've created a strong support team to care for him including: my trainer, barn manager, vet, farrier, even an equine massage therapist! I now also have a strong social network of friends who also own and love horses. I bring all of my experiences with Elwood, and horses in general, to my writing about them."

Loren is the author of a new Enslow series, Horses That Help with the American Humane Association, written for the upper elementary reader. Each title in the four book series introduces the reader to a different working horse. By the way, Elwood is on the cover of Therapy Horses. The other three titles cover draft horses, police horses, and performing horses.

These titles are available in library, paperback, and eBook formats. They can be found through your preferred vendor, local bookstores, enslow.com, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble.

Enslow author Lisa Wroble interviewed on C-SPAN

C-SPAN has started a new series called Cities Tour, which is part of the Local Content Vehicles Program, designed to give C-SPAN broader appeal by featuring stories outside of Washington, D.C. Covering unique literary culture in other parts of the country, this series focuses on a connection to government, history, or books. Lisa Wroble's book, The Right to Counsel, targets all three.

Lisa was interviewed by Christy Hinton from C-SPAN in March and the interview can be viewed here. It is also archived on a dedicated page for Cities Tour–Fort Meyers.

The Right to Counsel is the story of Clarence Earl Gideon, an unemployed drifter who was arrested in Florida and charged with burglarizing a pool hall. Because he could not afford an attorney, Gideon asked for one, and was turned down. He was found guilty of the crime and sentenced to five years in prison. Believing the U.S. Constitution was on his side, Gideon took his case all the way to the Supreme Court. The author explores the case, its impact on the U.S. legal system, and the movie made about it, Gideon's Trumpet, which starred Henry Fonda.

This title is part of Enslow's Famous Court Cases That Became Movies series.

Another Poem for National Poetry Month

The following poem was taken from Death Poetry, a new title in Enslow's Pure Poetry series. This poem was written by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Each of the four books in this series cover a different poetry theme. A
different poet is covered in each chapter, focuses on one poem, and is accompanied by detailed analysis discussing the style and technique, poetic devices, and the cultural significance. Every chapter ends with questions, and prompts students to discuss and assess the featured poems.

Good-by
Good-by, proud world, I’m going home,
Thou’rt not my friend, and I’m not thine;
Long through thy weary crowds I roam;
A river-ark on the ocean brine,
Long I’ve been tossed like the driven foam,
But now, proud world, I’m going home.
Good-by to Flattery’s fawning face,
To Grandeur, with his wise grimace,
To upstart Wealth’s averted eye,
To supple Office low and high,
To crowded halls, to court, and street,
To frozen hearts, and hasting feet,
To those who go, and those who come,
Good-by, proud world, I’m going home.
I’m going to my own hearth-stone
Bosomed in yon green hills, alone,
A secret nook in a pleasant land,
Whose groves the frolic fairies planned;
Where arches green the livelong day
Echo the blackbird’s roundelay,
And vulgar feet have never trod
A spot that is sacred to thought and God.
Oh, when I am safe in my sylvan home,
I tread on the pride of Greece and Rome;
And when I am stretched beneath the pines
Where the evening star so holy shines,
I laugh at the lore and the pride of man,
At the sophist schools, and the learned clan;
For what are they all in their high conceit,

When man in the bush with God may meet.

A Poem for National Poetry Month

The following poem was taken from Beauty Poetry, a new title in Enslow's Pure Poetry series, and was written by William Shakespeare. The four books in this series each cover a different poetry theme. Each chapter looks at one poem accompanied by detailed analysis discussing the style and technique, poetic devices, and the cultural significance. Every chapter ends with questions, and prompts students to discuss and assess the featured poems.

Sonnet 18
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May;
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimm’d;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

An excerpt is below:

"Going into more depth than similar titles for this age group, these books describe the origins, organization, culture and religion, daily lives, and declines and falls of ancient civilizations. Who invented windshield wipers?

With all of the rain and snow affecting the United States, does anyone think about something as simple as
who invented the windshield wipers that allow drivers to see in those bad conditions?

Before the invention of the windshield, drivers had to wear goggles to keep rain, snow, and bugs out of their eyes while driving. The first windshield, invented in 1904, could be folded down in case it became so dirty that drivers could not see through it. The other option was to pull over and try to clean the glass with your hand. Some drivers even tried rubbing an onion or carrot on the windshield, thinking that the oil from these vegetables would leave a film on the windshield, and repel the rain. That did not work either.

This 48 page book, written for the upper elementary reader, describes how Mary Anderson came up with her idea, what steps she took to try to patent the idea, and what happened after she allowed the patent to expire. Available in library, paperback, and eBook formats, this title is part of the Inventors at Work! series. This series is correlated to the Common Core College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards. Other inventors in this series include Ruth Wakefield, Willis Haviland Carrier, Percy Spencer, and Jacques Cousteau. It's National Tooth Fairy Day

Here are some fun facts about teeth. Did you know that when a baby's first teeth come in, they are called milk teeth (also known as "baby teeth") and there are 20 of them? When a child is about five or six, those teeth start falling out (hence the need for the Tooth Fairy) and are replaced by 32 permanent teeth. Cats and dogs also have two sets of teeth, but some reptiles and fish may have many sets of teeth during their lives. Crocodiles and sharks, for example, keep replacing their teeth their entire life.

Handy Health Guide to Your Teeth, one of twelve different titles in Enslow's Handy Health Guides series, is written for the middle school student, describing what role teeth play in our overall health, and how to take care of the teeth you have.

Other titles in the series cover topics such as ADHD, asthma, colds and flu, dyslexia, burns and blisters, and more. All of these titles are available in library and paperback editions, as well as eBooks. They are correlated to the Common Core and are available through your preferred vendor, local bookstore, enslow.com, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble.

Anniversary of '55-'56 Montgomery Bus Boycott Mass Arrests

Rosa Parks' stand against racial segregation spawned a protest that sparked the Civil Rights Movement. Saturday, February 22nd, represents a milestone in Parks' action and the subsequent Montgomery Bus Boycott. On that day, arrest warrants were issued for the boycott's leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rev. Ralph Abernathy. Learning about the ensuing court cases, the city's rigid racial division, and the success of the boycott's nonviolent campaign represent a critical window into the Civil Rights struggle. Enslow Publishers' new title -- Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Photographs -- leverages text and pictures to deliver an historical narrative accessible and interesting for young readers. Author David Aretha's 48-page work combines age-appropriate text with strong photographs that bring this key moment in the American story to light. School librarians and teachers will especially find this Lexile 880 book useful for developing visual literacy as well as other key academic skills.

Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Photographs, included in Enslow's "The Story of the Civil Rights Movement in Photographs," is available directly from Enslow Publishers in a variety of formats, including library-bound book, paperback, and e-book. The series is also available from your preferred vendor, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.
