Animals and Kids

I like to say that animals and kids go together like peanut butter and jelly. We know it's hard to keep animal books on any shelf, whether it's the library, the classroom, or the bookstore. I'm a little partial to dogs and bears myself.

Here at Enslow we have an abundance of animal titles.  From baby animals to endangered animals, from dog heroes to animals that live in the snow and ice. We've recently added animal titles to our PreK collection because librarians and teachers were asking for them. You can even find books about some of the biggest and smallest animals in the world. And you can't forget about pet care. Whether kids own pets or not, we know they love to read about them.

Remember, today is the last day to enter our Pick-A-Page Giveaway. Go to one of our e-catalogs and pick a page of titles you would like to receive for free. Like us on Facebook and leave a comment on Facebook, letting us know which page you would like to receive. We will choose one winner by random at the end of the week. That winner will be announced on Facebook on Monday!

Enslow Publishers: Putting the Historical back in Historical Fiction!

Here at Enslow Publishers, our goal and motto has always been: "Publishing the Best Nonfiction Books!" With that in mind, when we published our first historical fiction books in 2008, we made sure that our historical fiction closely followed historical fact. With the addition of Captain Hannah Pritchard: The Hunt for Pirate Gold this Fall, our Historical Fiction Adventures series now contains a total of 10 books. Having reached such a nice round number, it seems appropriate to put them all in one place. If any of these (extremely shiny) covers catch your eye, just click one to see more information on the book. Enjoy!

Don't forget about our Pick-A-Page Giveaway this week only. Go to one of our e-catalogs and pick a page of titles you would like to receive for free. New Enslow Books Discuss Asteroids, "Doomsday Rocks," and Close Call Scenarios

Library ISBN: 978-0-7660-3673-4
PPB ISBN: 978-1-59845-221-1
Later today, an asteroid will pass within 202,000 miles of our planet. While scientists are confident the object, known as 2005 YU55, will not strike Earth, it is in astronomical terms a close call.

Two Enslow books offer useful, engagingly written information about asteroids and other celestial rocks. One book -- Doomsday Rocks From Space -- is written with reluctant readers in mind. Author Margaret Poynter's 48-page, Guided Reading Level "T" title, part of the "Bizarre Science" series, investigates the science of doomsday rocks and the danger they pose to the planet. She also explores scientific theories that maintain that an asteroid collided with Earth during the Age of the Dinosaurs, effectively spelling the end of that era and many of its creatures.

Library ISBN: 978-0-7660-3188-3
PPB ISBN: 978-1-59845-191-7
For students at Guided Reading Level "N," Enslow's Far-Out Guide to Asteroids and Comets offers a skillfully designed approach to the science and the intrigue of these phenomena. Author Mary Kay Carson's well-written book stimulates a reader's interest as well as does justice to the topic's science. This 48-page work, part of Enslow's twelve-title "Far-Out Guide to the Solar System" series, also includes a profile of a scientist, a timeline of exploration, and a collection of "Far-Out Facts" useful for reports.

Books in the "Far-Out Guide to the Solar System" series and the "Bizarre Science" series are available in paperback and library-bound editions. Teacher's guides are available for all books in both series. Paperback prices are $7.95 per title; special six-pack rates are also available when you order directly from Enslow Publishers or from Enslow Classroom sales representatives. Library-bound editions are also available, starting from $17.95 per title (price reflects a 25% school/library discount from Enslow's list price).

Election Day and Enslow's Internet-Savvy "A Look at the 19th Amendment"

ISBN: 978-1-59845-067
Today's Election Day voting activity across the country reminds us that young readers need reliable, Internet-savvy books on the right to vote, a core topic in American history and civics lessons. Enslow's seven-book "The Constitution of the United States" series satisfies that need in many ways. A Look at the 19th Amendment, a 128-page book in the series, explores the background and issues impacting how women won the constitutionally guaranteed right to vote. Author Helen Koutras Bozonelis' book provides useful content written at appropriate age and grade levels, along with a curated list of thirty informative websites available via Enslow's myreportlinks.com password protected site.

This powerful research combination of print and electronic resources gives students contemporary ways to learn and to express themselves. Each title in the "Constitution of the United States" is available now for $24.95, which represents the 25% school/library discount price. Access to the exclusive myreportlinks.com site is included in the book's price.

If you're putting together a purchase order for Enslow's "free Kindle" offer, we suggest you add these Internet-savvy titles to it. It's a great way to expand your library's print and electronic resources for one price!

One Enslow staff favorite is Albert Pujols: MVP On and Off the Field, by Tom Needham. The St. Louis Cardinals' star is playing in the World Series starting this week!

Fire Prevention Week and Fire Dog Heroes

This week is National Fire Prevention Week, and I would like to take a moment to recognize the often unsung heroes of fire prevention: the hard-working Fire Dog Heroes.

Aside from keeping up morale at their fire department stations, most of us do not really know what fire dogs actually do. When we imagine a fire dog, we picture a Dalmatian living at a fire department station and riding in the fire engine. While a few fire departments do keep Dalmatians around, they are relatively rare a fire stations today. When fire departments relied on horse-driven steam pumpers instead of fire engines, dalmatians lived and traveled with the horses in order to keep them calm.

Though horses and steam pumpers are no longer used by firemen, fire dogs are still very important. Today's fire dogs are brought in shortly after a fire to sniff for accelerants (typically gasoline or any other flammable chemical) that may have fueled the fire. If a fire dog detects an accelerant, it will signal to its handler to take a sample to test for accelerants By detecting these accelerants, fire dogs are able to help a fire department determine if a fire was unintentional or the result of arson. Instead of Dalmatians, today's fire dogs are most often Labrador mixes, golden retrievers, golden mixes, and German shepherds. These breeds make great fire dogs because they like to work and they are capable of detecting very faint scents.

If you have kids or teach any children that want to learn more about fire dogs, check out Fire Dog Heroes, from our Amazing Working Dogs with American Humane series by Linda Bozzo.

Important Teen Guides

Enslow's new series, Life–A How-to Guide is a 7-book series for teens about a variety of issues that they face in their everyday lives. Whether you have a teen who is getting ready to driving or driving already, our Getting Read to Drive: A How-to Guide is great for research or personal use. It represents freedom but it also requires responsibility. From deciding if you're ready to drive, to the rules and safety, this book is a comprehensive guide for young drivers and their parents.

Technology has become so integrated into the life of today’s teenager that it is changing the way the American family communicates.  That's why we felt that Using Technology: A How-to Guide was an important book to include in this series. From cell phone etiquette, to texting, playing games, and listening to music, this title explores different forms of technology and how it affects our lives, and most importantly, how kids can stay safe using it.

It's Banned Books Week

ISBN 978-0-7660-2688-9
Grades 9-12
Looking at the list of classic titles on the banned books list, John Steinbeck has written The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. One of the main reasons Steinbeck's books are on the Banned Books list is because of their use of obscene language. Racism, sexuality, and other issues play a part, but obscene language is the recurring theme.

Enslow's Authors of Banned Books series includes titles on Mark Twain, Robert Cormier, Madeleine L'Engle, J.K. Rowling, and John Steinbeck. These titles include arguments of those opposed to these books and arguments of the books' supporters to help readers decide for themselves whether they should be banned.

Ye Yucky Middle Ages Brought to Life with Dazzling Illustrations!

Ye Catle Stinketh
ISBN:  978-0-7660-3786-1

Enslow's new series Ye Yucky Middle Ages asks the question-Could You Survive Medieval Life?  The four titles in this series breaks the general question down into Don't let the Barber Pull Your Teeth:  Could You Survive Medieval Medicine?, Sweaty Suits of Armor:  Could You Survive Being a Knight?, There's a Rat in My Soup:  Could You Survive Medieval Food?, and Ye Castle Stinketh:  Could You Survive Living in a Castle?  The titles themselves are an example of the fun and lively way that this series brings the time period to life by stressing the gross and yucky aspects of life during the Middle Ages.
Each title contains full color illustrations by Gerald Kelley, and the stunning illustrations just add to the amusement of learning about the more offensive living conditions during this period of time.  You can even view how Kelley puts together one of his magical illustrations featured in Ye Castle Stinketh on You Tube.  The books come library bound at $23.93, with 48 pages each.  This series is a great way to engage grades five through nine in learning about this fascinating (and quite disgusting) period in history!
